Chapter Seventeen

Maybelle’s Diner

Miller’s Grove, NY

“Is it weird being back?”

“It is weird,” I tell Skylar. “Not as painful as the last time but not somewhere I can relax. My shoulders have been knotted up since I got my first glimpse of Main Street yesterday.”

A car that has been riding my bumper for the last mile slides into the other lane and flies past, accelerating to a good twenty miles over the speed limit and paying no heed to the double yellow line, which was probably painted there due to the lack of visibility at the bend in the road up ahead. Another day, another person already late for work.

“You don’t say. I mean, you and your sister were kidnapped there. The man who did it lived there for almost forever, and he continues to haunt you. Oh, and a man you were growing attracted to and who you thought was Jim Bancroft’s son ended up being a serial killer, too. So yeah, I have no idea why you can’t cut loose out there.”

“Good point,” I smile.

“So how bad was the crime scene yesterday?” she asks.

Images of burnt grass and charred hay bales flicker across my mind’s eye. “Bad, Skylar. Really bad. I’ll fill you in when I get back. Let’s just say that Hess is up to his eyeballs in pure evil. He’s completely insane.”

“Please tell me you have some leads.”

“Not a single one. He still hasn’t provided us with his GPS location. But we’ll get him. Somehow. He doesn’t get to win.”

The pessimism that gripped me yesterday has waned substantially after a good night’s rest. I don’t know how all this is going to turn out. Whatever else Hess has planned and when he is going to carry it out is anyone’s guess. But Hess is not superhuman. He is not a god. Maybe he makes a mistake; maybe we get lucky. Maybe I don’t have much longer to live.

Okay, fine. I have no control over any of that.

However, I do have control over the mindset and choices I make. And I woke up this morning resolved to make finding Marvin Hess my one and only priority. If the FBI wants to tell me to stay clear, then let them. The Director and the suits that work for him didn’t walk through that field yesterday. They didn’t smell the burnt flesh still lingering in the air or stand over the bodies of the victims as they lay on the examination table and the medical examiner offered his analysis of what the fire did to them.

I did.

They did not have their family shredded apart by a monster.

I did.

They haven’t looked the people of this town in their eyes and witnessed the hurt and betrayal that they have experienced over and over again.

I have.

The Bureau has enacted policies for a reason. They have set boundaries for who can work what cases, and when. Such decisions keep the organization operating at maximum efficiency. If policies were never heeded and agents were allowed to go after whoever they wanted, then no criminals would ever be apprehended.
